Bird Management
Pigeons, Starlings and Gulls are a major pest in most towns and cities throughout the UK.
Pigeons Typically go to the highest point of a buildings to gather information on the location of its food supply. Due to this reliable food source, ideal nesting and roosting opportunities are soon found. These birds are here to stay. Nesting Birds tend to stay lower on buildings creating a mass of twigs and debris for the nest; the build up of fouling soon appears followed by the arrival of juveniles/youngsters. This becomes a potential hazard on its own:
- Spread of Diseases: Salmonella Ornithosis
- Deface/Erode buildings
- Slippery Footpaths
- Secondary Insect Infestations
- Unsightly Nesting Material
- Acidic Damage to car paint
- Unpleasant odour/smells
Depending on flock numbers in the vicinity, the level of infestation on any given building may vary. We would recommend that those areas affected be treated to prevent birds colonising the site. It is important that competent fully trained personnel should survey and install bird-proofing methods, as all to often, inexperienced contractors are responsible for unsuccessful bird control systems.
Advanced Pest Control can supply and install a full range of effective bird control systems.
We can protect and remove these unwelcome visitors from your property using various humane methods without causing any harm to the birds. Netting, Spikes and Post + Wire are all systems used to carry out Bird Proofing:

Information/Method
- 1. Netting Systems
- 2. Spike Systems
- 3. Post & Wire
- 4. Clearances
1. Netting Systems:
Total Exclusion: the most effective method is to deny birds access, creating a barrier between the building and the Birds.
Installation method:
- Nets are made from UV stabilised polythene Nylon.
- Available in Black, Translucent or Stone coloured.
- Comes in various sizes 19mm 28mm 50mm and 75mm.
- Creating a taut framework using 2mm Wire rope fitted to the building with galvanized or stainless steel fixings.
- The net is then attached to the wire rope using Hog ring fixings.
- Net Zips can be installed to allow access into the netted areas for future servicing/maintenance work.
Nets can be fitted to most buildings as well as:
- Air-conditioning units
- Ventilation units
- Canopies
- Loading Bays
- Windows openings
- Underground Car Parks

- Spikes are made using 304 grade stainless steel points and a polycarbonate base.
- Plastic spikes are also available.
Installation Method
- All areas, which are to be spiked, should be cleared ensuring that the surface is clean, dry and dust free.
- Fixing silicone is applied to the base of spike and placed onto the surface to be proofed.
- Installed in single strips or multi rows for wider areas.
- Spikes can also be fixed to gutters by using gutter clips.
- Simply attach clip to bottom of spike then push clip over the outer lip of gutter.
- No silicon required.
Spikes can be fitted to most buildings as well as:
- Shop Fronts and signage
- Gutters
- Drainpipes
- Windowsills and Ledges
- Parapet Walling
- Pipes/Conduit
- Security Cameras/Lights
- Most places, which are, dry and clean spike can be applied.
Once installed bird spike are virtually invisible and can provide a very successful bird deterrent system.

- Micro springs are placed at the end of pin or post.
- Fine Plastic coated wire is attached to the spring and to the other end of pin or post.
- This creates a wire, which gives way when pigeons try to land.
- Installed in single or multi rows for wider areas.

- Simply attach clamp to gutter insert spring and wire.
Post and wire can be fitted to most buildings as well as:
- Shop Fronts and signage
- Gutters
- Windowsills and Ledges

4. Fouling Removal
Health Hazard
Any Bird fouling should be considered a serious health hazard and should be treated as a matter of some urgency. Bird fouling is known to contain harmful bacteria and pathogens, which can be transmitted to humans via the birds and the bird fouling.
Diseases
- Listeriosis
- Paratyphoid
- Ornithosis
- Salmonellosis
- Tuberculosis
Bird fouling also contains harmful acids, which erode masonry, and damages paint on vehicles as well as block rainwater gutters and gullies. Bulk build up of fouling/nesting material and dead birds also contains many types of flies, crawling and biting insects, which can cause secondary infestations within the building.
Slippery footpaths caused by bird fouling can also be a hazard to staff and customers alike.
Bird Fouling is classified as controlled waste and should be disposed of correctly.
Removal
The following programme to be carried out for the removal of bird fouling:
- A Biocide spray treatment is applied to all the areas of concern.
- Bulk fouling to be removed with brushes scrappers.
- Bag up Fouling remove from site.
- 2nd Biocide spray treatment is applied to all the areas.
- All fouling, which is collected from site, will be disposed of and issued with a waste transfer note.
Benefits
You may notice the following benefits when a bird system has been put in place:
- Maintenance cleaning costs
- Reduce risk of illness to staff
- Slippery Floor/Footpath
- Water Blockages
- Damage to building
- Clean windows
- Damage to company image
- Noise
- Foul Odour
- Removal of secondary insect infestation
- Third party claim
